At COP30 — The United Nations Climate Change Conference 2025 Ibirapitanga’s engagement is focused on strengthening the food systems agenda within climate discussions, as well as promoting and amplifying just transition solutions through locally grounded and territorialized debates.
Ibirapitanga’s participation in COP30 involves support, coordination, direct participation, and organization of activities. Below, we compile key reference information on these different areas of engagement.
For the first time, the Conference will be held in the Brazilian Amazon Region, and after two years, it takes place in a democratic country, this time of the Global South, with expectations of broad social participation. We have organized a program of activities featuring Ibirapitanga and partner organizations supported by the Institute.
In 2025, Ibirapitanga allocated around BRL 1 million in support for civil society organizations, networks, and social movements engaged in preparatory, in-conference, and post-conference actions connected to COP30.
These COP30-related grants are structured around three main axes: (i) catalyzing political coordination and social innovation that bridge the climate and food agendas across multiple arenas and spaces; (ii) strengthening agroecology as a sustainable alternative to industrial agribusiness; and (iii) expanding the representation of traditional peoples, local communities, and family farming.
Recognizing the strategic importance of direct advocacy and participation in COP30 decision-making spaces, Ibirapitanga supports three Special Envoys whose areas of engagement at the conference align with the Institute’s priority themes.
Since 2018, Ibirapitanga has operated as a grantmaking foundation, with more than 50 active grants under its Food systems program. Considering that, to varying degrees, the work of all grantees contributes to integrating systemic food transformation with a climate perspective, Ibirapitanga convened an online meeting to align the strategies and programs of these organizations for COP30.
In addition to supporting The Global South House — a collaborative philanthropic initiative during COP30 — Ibirapitanga articulates within philanthropy in the conference context by co-leading and structuring the Food Systems Funders Group in Brazil and by serving as co-chair of the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, both spaces the Institute has been part of along its years of existence.
For this specific moment, Ibirapitanga also became a member of the Food Systems Transformation Science and Philanthropy Advisory Group (FST-SPAG) — alongside FAO, Embrapa, and CGIAR — which has been working in dialogue with the COP30 Presidency to propose coordinated actions.
Within the official COP30 Action Agenda, Ibirapitanga contributes through Activation Groups 9 (Food Systems Transformation) and 10 (Equitable Access to Food) — both directly aligned with its work in the field of food systems and its participation in the Board of Champions of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.
