Òkun is an independent visual artist from Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. Her work spans painting, illustration, and digital collage, engaging themes of spirituality, memory, crossroads, and belonging. She is currently pursuing a degree in Visual Arts at UFG – Federal University of Goiás, is a member of the TROVOA National Collective, and an intern at the Sertão Negro Art Studio/School led by artist Dalton Paula. She has participated in exhibitions such as “Crônicas Cariocas” at the Museum of Art of Rio – RJ (2021) and “Que Nascerá!” at the SP–Arte Viewing Room (2021), as well as the SP–Arte contemporary art fair (2022), held at the Biennial Pavilion – SP. Òkun illustrated the books “Ninguém Matou Suhura” and “Neighbours” by Mozambican writer Lília Momplé, published by Editora Funilaria (2022).

Working with Instituto Ibirapitanga on the creation of illustrations was a captivating journey that allowed me to express deep feelings through symbols, colors, and forms. I drew inspiration from Adinkra symbols to convey hope, faith, democracy, and unity, reinforcing the importance of respecting differences as we build welcoming environments together.

In the first illustration, I portrayed everyday Brazilian life and hope in times of struggle; in the second, I explored a dreamlike universe, celebrating dreams, transformation, and the desire for a better future; and in the third, inspired by the inauguration of Anielle Franco, I celebrated the people, the struggle for racial justice, and the well-being of the Black population.

It was a rich experience that brought together affection and resistance, celebrating achievements while recognizing that many steps still lie ahead.
